PP suggestions

This is a picture I took from the Water Rock Knob overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'm wanting know if there is anything I can do in Photo Shop Elements 4 to get rid of the Milky Color on the horizon caused by the haze. I'm wanting my sky to look as uniformly blue as possible, except I want to keep the clouds. Also, how do I post a picture in this forum. I can link to my Photo Bucket account as I have done with this picture. However, when I try to post the picture directly into the forum, it post it at its original size, even after resizing in photo bucket to message board size. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As for posting the pic, just copy the IMG code on the right of the screen, that is how I showed it there for you!

Thanks Bill - but of course there are plenty of folk here doing tasty PP, which is great because like everyone else I get to keep on picking up new techniques (when they spill the beans as to what they did).

As for aggiecutter's specific question on get rid of the Milky Color on the horizon caused by the haze, I loaded the image, sat and looked at it for a while and then realised that I didn't have a clue! (Other than some vague thoughts about cloning, but the subtle transitions you get in skies can make that really difficult, as would getting a good boundary between the replaced sky and the mountains (not too difficult maybe) and between the replaced sky and the clouds on the left (quite possibly not at all easy). So I thought I'd keep my head down on this one, having nothing useful to contribute, and wait and learn from others.

Interesting. I, too, thought have a go though not knowing the best way to attack the problem.

One option was: duplicate layer. set blend mode to overlay. While this gets rid of the mist, it leaves the foreground very vibrant. To overcome this set layer mask, and partially block the top (overlay) layer from coming through using opacity of around 50%.

The result (bet others can do loads better )

I initially read "haze" in aggiecutter's post and so tried something similar to get rid of the haze, but then I read aggiecutter's post again and read "...the Milky Color on the horizon...". This made me think it is what is just above the mountains that is aggiecutter's issue rather than the haze generally, with the aim being for the "sky to look as uniformly blue as possible, except I want to keep the clouds". Thanks for the suggestions. I like what Merv did to the picture as it really brought out the detail in the mountians. However, as Robin pointed out, I was wondering if there was any way to get rid of the milky color in the sky, just above the horizon.

Made selection of troubled area. Filled it with "skycolor" on a separat layer and then lowered the opacity to blend it in.
Its not perfect but I am happy with it.

I haven't seen Elements 4's workspace... but if it looks like Photoshop's...
I think you can do this simple PP. Just by using the Clone Stamp tool, Lasso tool and Layers.

Did this in PDN... Lasso'd the hazy mountains,adjusted using "local contrast adjustment plug-in" sharpened the overall picture,ran it thru "noiseware community"
put it back in PDN and adjusted in "curves + plug-in" to try to get a little bit of warmth back into it that the sharpening removed. I like how the mtns and sky turned out but i think I over sharpened the foreground a touch...On second thought I think i've taken too much warmth out of the pic,lol oh well.

Actually, I think I like the exaggeration the best! I like appropreatly saturated colors though. Almost looks like an HDR?

Here's my take on it:


First, I made a new layer, eyedroppered the sky color, then drew over the sky haze with a really soft brush (5%ish). After that I basically smudge tooled it to blend it in a little with the rest fo the sky, then set the whole layer to around 55%.

I also adjusted the levels a little. (adjusting the mid level of the blue channel to about .85 got rid of most of the mountain haze.)
